The Amazing Raspberry Pi Range Just Got A Powerful Upgrade

The Raspberry Pi has captured the imaginations of old and young alike and therefore a plethora of projects and implementations for the original models of the credit card sized computer.  It has been a staple feature of our Best Geek Tech list and this new, upgraded model will now replace it!

Well the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B is now here to further enable hobbiests and learners alike to do something extraordinary with this pint-sized marvel.  At around £30 to buy, it really is incredible value.

Raspberry Pi 2

The new Raspberry Pi 2 features:
– A 900MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU (~6x performance)
– 1GB LPDDR2 SDRAM (2x memory)
– Complete compatibility with Raspberry Pi 1
As this new model has an ARMv7 processor installed it can run the full range of ARM GNU/Linux distros (including Snappy Ubuntu Core) and will even be able to run Microsoft Windows 10, when released later in 2015!!

Back in 2012 the original Pi came with a single 700MHz ARM11 processor. The new Pi 2 comes with a 900MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 complex (making it 6 times faster than before!!). Everything else remains the same as before, meaning no painful transitions for anyone who has already invested time in writing or building with their original Pi.

It is amazing that for the last six months the Raspberry Pi builders have been working closely with Microsoft to bring the forthcoming Windows 10 to Raspberry Pi 2. It is unclear as to what the Raspberry Pi-compatible version of Windows 10 will contain but you can keep updated on this via Microsoft’s IoT website.

For those of us who loved the original Pi, but felt it lacked a little oomph in the CPU department, this is great news. The World’s favourite small computer just go the boost it deserves and now we will hopefully see a whole new range of projects and uses for this amazing little computer start to appear.

The community that has built up around the Raspberry Pi is fantastic and there really are a ton of projects and uses for this computer and that continue to amaze, baffle and delight all of us tech enthusiasts.

Sometimes it is hard to forget that this project was targetting getting kids involved in IT, as though this has worked out really, really well, it has really caught the imagination of us older tech-types who continue to use these little wonders for all kinds of pet projects.

If you haven’t used yours as a media centre or an AirPlay receiver or as a stop-motion camera or a weather station or to capture pictures from high up in the Earth’s atmosphere whilst attached to a balloon (as well as the 1000s of other uses for them) then do it today :)

The Raspberry Pi 2 is now available on Amazon UK and all tech hobbiests of enthusiasts should definitely have a play :)
